Watching over the Shuswap

Over 60 leaders from around the Shuswap met recently for talks on the Shuswap regional trails strategy.

"It's the process of working together that's important," said Louis Thomas, a Neskonlith councillor who has called for improved pedestrian paths to connect Salmon Arm with Shuswap First Nations communities west of the town centre, as well as improved management of traditional lands surrounding Mt. Ida.

Priorities identified included:

  • improved recreational access management in sensitive alpine areas
  • development of ways to protect vulnerable cultural sites, such as pictographs along trails by the Adams River
  • inventories of existing recreational use in areas like Mt Ida
  • work on protocols for Secwepemc naming of trails and interpretation throughout the Shuswap improved collaboration on mapping, promotion, and tourism

Also discussed were legacy projects, such as the Sicamous-to-Armstrong rail trail and the West Bay trail.

Organizations or communities interested in connecting with the Shuswap Regional Trails roundtable should contact [email protected] or call 250-832-0102.
