Water service, road access restored after Seymour Arm landslide

Road reopens after slide

A forest service road has been reopened and private water service restored on a temporary line following a landslide in the Shuswap.

The slide, near Seymour Arm on July 2, damaged infrastructure but did not injure any residents of the area.

The debris flow wiped out a water diversion structure on Bass Creek that supplied water to about 500 people in Seymour Arm.

Canoe Forest Products has now repaired the 1200 Forest Servce Road, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District reports.

The private water system is running on a temporary line, and the those in charge of the system continue to work on plans for a long-term repair.

Recent heavy rains contributed to the slide, which saw water and debris damaging an existing channel and carving out a new path.

The incident highlighted the importance of Neighbourhood Emergency Programs, the CSRD says.

"In this case, the Neighbourhood Emergency Program coordinator in Seymour Arm was able to assist the Shuswap Emergency Program with assessing and communicating community needs. This allowed the Shuswap Emergency Program to be responsive and efficient in providing assistance."

SEP was able to secure funds from Emergency Management BC for a water tanker truck to be dispatched to the area to supply water on a temporary basis to affected residents.

Monitoring and additional repair work is still ongoing.
