Police, search and rescue investigate flares on Shuswap Lake

Distress flares investigated

Police and search and rescue crews responded to distress flares Sunday on Shuswap Lake.

The flares were seen in the Blind Bay area.

A caller reported two distress flares being sent up from what appeared to be a sailboat to the west of Copper Island.

Marine Search and Rescue were deployed and attended. In the meantime, a small boat was seen leaving the area.

Searchers determined the boat was unoccupied and was not taking on water.

"It appeared that everyone was OK at that time," says RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West.

Police remind boaters, if they are in distress on the water, to use all distress mechanisms at their disposal.

"If you are rescued as a result of a distress beacon of any kind, whether it is a flare, smoke or other signalling device, please call in to the RCMP and let us know that you are safely off the lake. In letting us know you are OK, we can scale down our response and check in with you."
