Food forest feeds hungry

A Salmon Arm food forest has been recognized nationally as healthy urban green space.

The Lighthouse Community Food Forest at the Salmon Arm Salvation Army Food Bank has been recognized as a Greener Green Space recipient for 2022 by the Society for Organic Urban Landcare (SOUL).

The edible landscape was designed and the project managed by Lekker Land Design out of Coldstream with the support of the Shuswap Food Action Society.

Lekker Land Design owner Keli Westgate said she is honoured to be recognized by SOUL for the project.

The food forest took root on land next to the food bank in 2021, making last year the first full year for the program.

“Basically the idea was that the food bank was having more people in need of food and less people donating food...so the idea was why not try to grow as much food as we can right on the site,” said Westgate.

“It was an under utilized space, and permaculture was the perfect match for something like that.”

Westgate said the food forest provides fresh produce for food bank clients.

Greener Green Spaces is a recognition program for sites from across Canada that exemplify greener green space stewardship. The aim of the program is to showcase examples of ecologically-focused land care as a means to inspire others and to further the movement across Canada.

To be recognized as a Greener Green Space, the site must be cared for using land care practices that:

  • increase biodiversity and support plant health
  • improve soil health and protect air and water quality
  • take steps to minimize waste and energy consumption
  • actively avoid the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers

With increased need at the food bank and threats to local food security due to extreme weather events made worse by climate change, this project is rooted in solutions as it produces organic fruit, vegetables and herbs that are accessible and visible to the community.
