Mediation averts strike at Salmon Arm seniors home

Mediation averts strike

Job action has been postponed at a Salmon Arm seniors home.

BC Government Employees Union workers at Lakeside Manor issued 72-hour strike notice on Friday and planned to walk off the job Monday.

However BCGEU communications officer Bronwen Barnett says the employer "has filed for mediation, which automatically delays any job action."

The facility is owned by Edmonton-based Vantage Living Inc. It applied for mediation on Saturday, averting strike action on Monday.

Mediation is scheduled for Jan. 25.

The union represents 30 workers at the facility, and said it is "hopeful a fair deal can be reached in mediation and without disruption to the residents."

The two parties reached an impasses after several months of negotiations.

Employees are seeking wage increases in line with inflation, the union says. Right now, most workers make minimum wage with the highest pay at $20.90 per hour.
