Salmon Arm RCMP urge drivers to slow down after wave of crashes on Trans-Canada Highway

10 days, 11 Hwy 1 crashes

Salmon Arm RCMP responded to 18 collisions over the last 10 days.

Eleven of those crashes were on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Notable incidents included an overturned transport truck on Jan. 24 in the eastbound lands of Highway 1 near Broderick Creek Frontage Road.

A pickup then slid into the wrecked trailer of the semi.

The incident closed the highway for more than four hours.

The drivers and passengers involved were not seriously injured.

Also that evening, the driver of a rental vehicle left the highway near Summit Forest Service Road and went down a 50-foot embankment.

The driver was taken to hospital as a precaution, but was released the same night.

On Jan. 31, a semi left the Trans-Canada and struck the garage of a house on Walsh Road in Blind Bay.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor cuts. The homeowner was asleep and was uninjured.

On Feb. 1, no one needed to go to hospital despite two vehicles colliding head-on collision on the highway.

All collisions were on slippery roads and during inclement weather, says Salmon Arm RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West.

"The message to motorists is to slow down and take care during these weather events. The speed limit is for perfect conditions, and our conditions are nowhere near perfect," says West.
