Marion Jones Suing Accuser

  • Olympic track star Marion Jones filed a defamation lawsuit Wednesday against BALCO head Victor Conte, who told a national TV audience that he gave her steroids and watched her inject herself with them. Jones is seeking $25 million US in the suit, alleging Conte tarnished her reputation when he made the statement Dec. 3 on ABC's 20/20. Conte and three others connected to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative were indicted in February by a U.S. grand jury for a variety of alleged offences, including illegally distributing steroids.   • The NHL Players' Association is waiting for the NHL to pick up the phone and resume collective bargaining talks. It likely won't happen until the new year.   • Halifax appears to be the odds on favourite to play host to a CFL exhibition game next spring. According to the Halifax Chronicle-Herald, Halifax has been selected over Moncton to host the June 11 match between the Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts and an as yet to be determined opponent.   • Russian great Vyacheslav Fetisov and former Montreal Canadiens sniper Mats Naslund were among the six inductees to the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame announced Wednesday. Russian defenceman Viktor Kuzkin, who played in the 1972 Summit Series, and German Alois Schloder, who spent all 23 of his seasons playing for his hometown club EV Landshut, join Fetisov and Naslund in the players category.   • The father of Montreal Canadiens goalie Jose Theodore and the player's half-brother pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of loansharking and possessing a restricted weapon. Ted Nicholas Theodore, 71, and his son Nicky, 45, reached their deals amid negotiations between the Crown and the defence, exempting the accused from a number of other charges including gangsterism. Nicky Theodore was ordered to pay a $21,000 fine and his father Ted will be sentenced Jan. 31. Full story
