Vancouver Canucks player Todd Bertuzzi may not have to face a trial on criminal charges because his lawyers are close to reaching a plea bargain, according to a newspaper report.
The Vancouver Province reports sources close to the discussions say the two sides have almost reached an agreement.
It's likely that a plea bargain would include a reduction in sentence for Bertuzzi.
The NHL star was charged with assault causing bodily harm linked to the Colorado Avalanche's Steve Moore during a game on March 8. The maximum sentence is 18 months in jail.
Bertuzzi's case is scheduled to be in court on Jan. 17. He is to be tried by judge alone.
Bertuzzi's agent Pat Morris refused to say whether a plea bargain was imminent.
