Flyers Lose Desjardins

  • The Philadelphia Flyers will not have defenceman Eric Desjardins for their playoff series against the New Jersey Devils. Flyers general manager Bob Clarke says Desjardins will undergo surgery after complications developed with his broken right forearm. The procedure will keep him sidelined for the rest of the year.
  • Ted Nolan plans to take another stab at the New York Rangers head coaching job. According to the Newark Star Ledger, Nolan has hired a consultant to help him put together a high-tech presentation which he plans to personally deliver to General Manager Glen Sather. It's the third time Nolan has made a serious pitch for the job.
  • The Newark Star Ledger reported Wednesday that New Jersey Devils centre Igor Larionov has turned down the job of general manager for Team Russia in this summer's World Cup of Hockey.
  • Adam Deadmarsh says he will likely retire if he doesn't feel better in September. Deadmarsh, who has been sidelined since December 2002 due to post-concussion syndrome, tells the Los Angeles Times his recovery has stagnated to the point where he needs to consider the long-term, big picture.
  • Defenceman Ryan Whitney, the fifth overall pick in the 2002 NHL draft, has signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • Mattias Norstrom, the captain of the Los Angeles Kings, has undergone successful surgery to remove bone spurs and scar tissue from his left elbow.
  • The NFL says a federal district court judge made seven major legal errors in her ruling last February which paved the way for Maurice Clarett and other underclassmen and high school players to enter the NFL draft.
  • Derrick Walker's Champ Car plans are reportedly close to being finalized, less than two weeks before the start of the season in Long Beach. According to several reports, Walker is prepared to field a one car team this year with Mario Haberfeld the odds on favourite to be behind the wheel. Haberfeld spent last season with Mi-Jack/Conquest Racing.
