Top spot at Utah's Rampage

A legendary Okanagan-based mountain biker has taken the top spot at one of the biggest mountain biking competitions in the world.

Brett Rheeder, who calls Vernon home, took top spot at Red Bull Rampage Friday afternoon, with a score of 89.66, besting Spain's Andreu Lancondeguy, who placed second and Utah's Ethan Nell, who took third.

Red Bull Rampage has been hosted in the rocky desert of Virgin, Utah since 2008. It had previously been held at a different Utah location from 2001 to 2004, but that competition was cancelled for three years due to the increasing dangers the competitors were facing.

The current competition is still plenty dangerous though, with riders launching off massive jumps and giant rocky cliffs, with little to no room for mistakes.

This is the first win at Rampage for Rheeder, who's competed six times at the event, but has never placed higher than fifth.

“It's beyond words, I did not see myself being able to pull off a win here," he said. "Being down here is unbelievable.”

He said he pushed himself out of his comfort zone Friday.

"I'm just pumped that I put it together and made it to the bottom without crashing," Rheeder said after his first of two runs, which ultimately gave him the win.

"That was exactly what I wanted to do, I don't have anything more that I can do.”

Rheeder is no stranger to dominance in his sport, after taking Gold at Whistler's Crankworx Joyride competition in 2016, the only other competition that rivals Rampage in mountain biking prominence. He also took Gold at the 2013 X-Games slopestyle competition.

The Okanagan was well-represented at Rampage this year, with Kelowna's Tom van Steenbergen, who hosted a competition at Big White this summer, placing fourth place. Kamloops' Graham Agassiz, who was nursing a scapula injury this week, was also competing.
