Vernon seamstress sews face masks for care home workers

A Vernon woman is making face masks to help out local care home workers.

Seamstress Shala Adams posted photos of the brightly coloured masks on her Facebook page Tuesday night after completing 20 of the masks.

She sewed them after a friend who works at a local care home said they were running low.

"I'll make them for free for health-care workers as long as I've got enough stuff," said Adams.

She has 75 more cut out, but needs more elastic before she can finish them.

"There will be more," she said, "provided I can find the materials.

"I have enough material to make about 120, and a ton of liner material – probably enough to make 500."

The material has to be high quality and "have a really tight weave," she said, so as to stop particulate matter.

Adams said she's had the tropical-themed material for years, and thought she might as well use it. Originally, she had planned to make Hawaiian shirts with it.

"This afternoon's project. Special order. Hate that I even need to make these, but they are fabulous!" she posted with the photos.

Adams was matter of fact about her charitable act.

"If the government is going to step up and help people, then I can, too," she said.
