Thief steals trailer from crane company lot north of Vernon

Thief caught on camera

A thief was caught on camera stealing a trailer from a work yard north of Vernon Wednesday morning.

The theft took place about 6:40 a.m., 20 minutes before the shop opens.

"One of our guys missed him by 14 minutes," says Greg Nachtegaele, operations manager for Armstrong Crane & Rigging. "It seemed like he knew when the right time to come was."

The thief was driving a flatbed pickup, which appears to be navy blue or black in colour. The truck is a Ford, with a light bar on the roof and no front licence plate. The 24-foot trailer that was stolen is black with silver trim around the edges, and only had tie-downs and other small materials inside.

"The way this guy backed his truck up to the trailer in one try shows that this can't be the first time he's done this," says Nachtegaele. "He cut the lock we had on the gate, and also cut a hitch lock, too."

This is the first time the company has been hit – but just a month ago another trailer was taken from a different business that rents from the crane firm. Nachtegaele believes the incidents highlight a growing problem.

"Theft seems to be on the rise in Vernon, and then it just spreads outward from there," he said. "I've heard of a lot of businesses in this area suffering from break-ins and thefts recently, and it's really getting out of hand."

The company has filed a report with police, and asks if anyone has information or spots the vehicle to contact Vernon RCMP at 250-545-7171.
