Vernon piper plays on his balcony during self-isolation

Bagpiper on the balcony

The skirl of the bagpipes can be heard in Vernon during these tough times, thanks to local piper Tom Skinner.

Skinner has shared a series of posts on local community Facebook groups, with his latest one including a video snippet. The song in the video is a tune called 'The Geritol Kid', which has a special meaning for Skinner.

"This tune has a fascinating history," he wrote in his Facebook post. "It was composed by BC piper Dave Laws, and he was a piper with the Royal Scots from 1938 to 1945. He also played with the Canadian Scottish Regiment Pipe Band in Victoria from 1951 to 1960."

Geritol is a vitamin supplement for seniors, and Skinner says Frank Knight, the pipe major of the Canadian Scottish Regiment, referred frequently to some of his senior pipers as the 'Geritol Gang.'

Skinner is in day six of self-isolation, and he came across this idea as a way to pass the time.

"As my mom used to say to my brother and sister: 'Get your coat on and get outside,'" he wrote. "I will be playing every day, and hope my piping friends in the Valley and beyond will join me."

Skinner will be playing the pipes every night at 7 p.m., and hopes a few fellow self-isolators will have a listen to the music he plays.
