Vernon RCMP investigating sudden death of 8-year-old child

8-year-old dies suddenly

UPDATE: 2:45 p.m.

School District 22 says it is working with the RCMP on the criminal investigation of a Lumby child's death.

Details have not been released on the cause of the eight year old's death, or why police believe criminality may be involved.

A statement from the school district says:

"School District 22 has been informed of the death of one of our students by the RCMP. The school district will continue to work closely with the RCMP and will provide additional information if appropriate."

The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the circumstances of an eight-year-old child who died tragically at Kelowna General Hospital on April 5.

Vernon RCMP were called to a residence in Lumby the previous day to assist BC Emergency Health Services. The child was airlifted to KGH that evening, and was pronounced deceased in the early hours of the following morning.

In respect to the family, the name of the child will not be released, and no further details will be given at this time.
