The 5th annual Vernon Proms Classical Music Festival will run fro July 10 to Aug. 6 with modified COVID-19 measures in place.

The sound of music will be heard in the Okanagan starting today.

The 5th annual Vernon Proms Classical Music Festival will run from July 10 to Aug. 6 with COVID-19 measures in place.

The event will keep Vernon and Kelowna – safely - buzzing with live classical music this summer. 

Vernon Proms 2020 will be physically distanced, but socially connected and full of uplifting music.

All paid and free performances will take place at several indoor and outdoor venues in Vernon and Kelowna.

Featured performances include contralto Lynne McMurtry with All the Wild Worlds, a newly commissioned song cycle by Penticton composer Nicholas Ryan Kelly, a string trio rendition of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations by Cvetozar Vutev, Ashley Kroecher and Martin Krátký, Medieval and Renaissance music with soprano Tracy Fehr, a recital by pianist Alison d'Amato featuring Brian Martin as narrator, and the traditional all-Bach concert.

There will also be impromptu concerts at parks and beaches.

The Singers’ Club will meet for weekly masterclasses with different vocal teachers and Opera Kelowna is offering a concert of operatic favourites.

And for an added thrill, audiences will hear the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, a world-class period music ensemble.

In addition to classical music, this year’s program includes a selection of jazz and easy-listening pieces, with appearances by Fish on Five Brass Quintet, the jazz trio Wood Wire & Fire and jazz vocalist Karen Wiseman.

All events will be limited to 50 people in alignment with BC’s current safety recommendations. All audience members will be encouraged to wear a mask or a face shield and masks will be provided for those who do not have their own.

Face shields will be available for those who cannot tolerate a mask.
