5 patients rushed to hospital in serious Enderby crash, 2 airlifted

Hwy 97 reopen after crash

UPDATE 6:17 p.m.

Highway 97A has now reopened following a serious collision this morning, one kilometre south of Enderby. 

DriveBC confirms the road has been clear between Canyon and Fortune Roads.

No word on the incident at this time.

Highway 97A remains closed at this hour, following a serious collision this morning just south of Enderby.

There is no word yet on when the highway will reopen.

Traffic is being detoured around the scene.


UPDATE: 12:15 p.m.

Five patients are being rushed to hospital from the scene of a serious collision on Highway 97A just south of Enderby.

BCEHS spokesperson Shannon Miller says the crash required a multi-unit response, including four ground ambulances and two helicopters, which landed at the scene. 

"Paramedics are currently still on scene, but are transporting five patients. Two patients are being airlifted by helicopter to hospital in critical condition. Three additional patients are being transported by ground ambulance – two in serious condition and one in stable condition."

It's believed the airlifted patients are being taken to Kelowna General Hospital, where a Code Orange mass casualty alert has reportedly been issued.


UPDATE: 11:32 a.m.

North Okanagan RCMP confirm three vehicles were involved in a major collision that has closed Highway 97A just south of Enderby.

The head-on crash happened about 9:45 a.m.

"At this time, status of the vehicle occupants is not known; however, BC Ambulance Service has responded to assist," says RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tania Finn.

The public is asked to avoid the area.

"RCMP remain on scene and continue to investigate the cause of the incident. At present, north and southbound traffic is being rerouted to Back Enderby Road."

There is no word yet on when the highway may reopen.


UPDATE: 11:20 a.m.

Witnesses report a third vehicle appears to have been involved in a major collision just south of Enderby.

A compact car and minivan may have collided, sending one of the vehicles into a logging truck.

It's not yet clear which of the vehicles may have struck the larger truck, if either, although photos from the scene show first responders focusing on a minivan off the side of the road.

Highway 97A remains closed at this time.

Traffic is being diverted around a serious crash involving a logging truck just south of Enderby.

Vehicles are being directed around the scene via Back Enderby Road.


UPDATE: 11 a.m.

The crash that has closed Highway 97A just south of Enderby involves a logging truck and what appears to be a minivan.

Reader photos from the scene show a medevac helicopter has landed at the scene between Canyon and Fortune (Back Enderby) roads.

It's believed the minivan crossed the centre line, colliding with the logging truck.

RCMP, paramedics, firefighters and AIM Roads crews are all on scene.

The minivan appears to be off the side of the road, partially down an embankment.

DriveBC reports Highway 97A is closed just south of Enderby.

It reports a vehicle incident between Canyon and Fortune (Back Enderby) roads, one kilometre south of town, has closed the highway in both directions.

The nature of the incident is not known at this time, or whether any injuries are involved.

DriveBC reports a scene assessment is in progress.
