A hockey academy has been approved in principal at Armstrong's Pleasant Valley Secondary School.
The North Okanagan-Shuswap board of education recently gave the approval for the PVSS Hockey Academy.
A draft budget plan would see a cohort of 20 students pay $1,320 each for the specialized education.
The $26,400 budget would include $10,000 for coaching and $7,000 in ice fees.
PVSS principal Chelsea Prince noted that a parent meeting to gauge interest has already resulted in 21 students indicating interest out of a possible 30 seats in the program.
"We're really excited about it," said Prince.
The intended provider would be RPM Hockey, which has established a number of academy programs across the province and has developed a strong reputation.
District Supt. Peter Jory said student-athletes have in past had to leave the area to join competitive teams and attend academies focused on the sport. ?
