Original 11:10 a.m.

An evacuation order has been issued for homes threatened by the Bunting Road wildfire on the east side of Mabel Lake.

The order affects the 10,000 to 17,000 blocks of Mabel Lake Forest Service Road, including the properties known as Cottonwoods.

The Regional District of North Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre issued the order Tuesday morning.

The RDNO has declared a local state of emergency, based on recommendations from the BC Wildfire Services.

Members of the local police department and other agencies will be expediting the evacuation.

The RDNO does not expect the evacuation order to be short term, and evacuees will not have access to their houses while the order is in place. Bring pets and important items with you.

BCWS says one helicopter will support six personnel by bucketing the fire today, there has not been any growth since Monday and the blaze remains at 600 hectares in size.

On Monday seven BCWS personnel along with industry worked to ensure control lines hold. Crews have made good progress on the fire, constructing guard on the north and south ends of the west flank, widening existing road ways and working on small hot spots in a plantation east of the fire.

The RDNO advises anyone in the noted area to leave immediately.

Residents are advised to register as an evacuee at the RDNO office at 9848 Aberdeen Rd., Coldstream.

Registration can also be done online and should be done after leaving the area.

People are advised to do the following:

  • Shut off all gas and electrical appliances other than refrigerators and freezers.
  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Close gates but do not lock.
  • Gather your family and, if you have room, take a neighbour or someone needing transportation. Do not use more vehicles than you have to.
  • Take critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available. Take pets in pet kennels or on leash.
  • Do not use the telephone unless you need emergency service.
