Name of victim in Spallumcheen homicide revealed in court documents

Murder victim named

Court documents have revealed the name of the victim in a North Okanagan homicide.

Vernon court registry records show Jevon Smith, born in 1975, is facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of Dakota Samoleski.

On Sept. 20, RCMP launched a manhunt in the Spallumcheen area, resulting in the arrest of Smith.

The relationship between Smith and Samoleski has not been made public.

Court records show Smith has an extensive criminal record dating back to 2013.

Those past charges include careless use of a firearm, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, motor vehicle offences, break and enter charges, and others.

Police are asking anyone who had contact with Smith in the hours before the incident to contact the Southeast District Major Crime unit at 1-877-987-8477.

Smith is scheduled to appear in Vernon court on Monday.
