The fire at Vernon's Canadian Tire has been deemed “suspicious” and the RCMP is now investigating.

Vernon Fire Rescue responded to the fire in the Village Green Shopping Centre just before 3 a.m. Saturday morning, according to a press release from the City of Vernon.

“Upon arrival, crews found a large fire outside the building, within a locked compound,” the city said. “Initial crews on scene knocked the fire down quickly and then gained access inside the building to confirm the extension to the structure was extinguished.

Fourteen firefighters responded, along with police and paramedics.

No one was injured in the fire, but it caused extensive damage to the exterior of the Canadian Tire building, along with minor fire and smoke damage inside.

While the fire has been deemed suspicious, the city did not say how the fire is believed to have started.
