Vernon's Auxiliary Animal Thrift Store needs help filling hampers for area seniors

Help helpers help seniors

Gena Barzan needs some help spreading Christmas cheer to Vernon seniors.

Barzan runs the Auxiliary Animal Thrift Store, and each year they put together hampers for those in need.

For the past two years, the auxiliary put together more than 50 hampers, but because of a recent move and other factors, is only able to help 18 seniors this year. And now those are threatened, too.

Barzan decided to focus strictly on seniors in need this year, and she has been working with the Lake Country Food Bank to fill hampers, but unforeseen circumstances means the food bank won't be able to help out as originally planned.

That has left Barzan and other volunteers scrambling.

“On Dec. 15, we are planning to hand out monthly food hampers for 18 wonderful seniors. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are now going to need to come up with the items for the hampers ourselves.... If you are able to help us in any way, we would be very grateful,” she says.

Barzan is hoping to provide fresh food items for the seniors, and will be purchasing 18 hams to give them.

She's looking for donations of vegetables (canned and/or fresh), potatoes, pasta, tea and coffee.

“We are also hoping to be able to add a little treat to each hamper, however our primary focus at this point will be food items,” she said.

Financial donations can be sent via e-transfer to [email protected], and specify it is for the seniors hampers.

“For the first part of December, any money put into our store donation jar will also be allocated to this,” she said.

Donations can also be dropped off at the auxiliary, 3100A 29th Ave. in Vernon.
