The start of the Western Hockey League regular season has been delayed indefinitely

WHL season again on hold

The Western Hockey League will not be starting its 2020-2021 regular season as hoped Jan. 8.

The league announced Tuesday afternoon it is delaying the start of the season.

A statement says following consultation with regional health authorities, the board will meet in January to consider potential start dates.

The league hoped to play an abbreviated 50-game schedule ending May 2, with or without fans, but with current restrictions in place on both sides of the border, it was forced to cancel those plans.

“We continue to make every effort to get our season started, but our first priority has always been the health and safety of our players, and everyone associated with the WHL,” said WHL commissioner Ron Robison.

“Given the public health restrictions that are currently in effect, we are not in a position to determine a new target date for our season. We will continue to consult with health authorities to determine when it is safe and responsible to get our season started.”
