Blazers double up on Giants

The Kamloops Blazers top line combined for 11 points on Wednesday at Sandman Centre in a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Giants.

Caedan Bankier, Logan Stankoven, Daylan Kuefler (2), Aapo Sarell and newcomer Olen Zellweger, acquired in a trade-deadline blockbuster on Sunday, were the goal scorers for the Blazers. Ty Thorpe (2) and Ty Halaburda scored for the Giants.

The Blazers led 3-0 after the first and 5-0 after the second before letting their foot off the gas early in the third period, allowing three Vancouver goals in a seven-minute span. Zellweger made it a 6-3 final with an empty-net goal at 18:19 of the third.

Stankoven finished the night with five points (1G, 4A), while Bankier put up four (1G, 3A) and Kuefler managed two (2G). Sarell had a two-point night, finishing with a goal and an assist.

Dylan Ernst made 19 saves on 22 Vancouver shots to earn his 22nd win of the season in net. Giants goalie Jesper Vikman allowed four goals on 17 shots in a little more than one period of work. Brett Mirwald stopped 23 of 24 shots he faced in relief.

The Blazers scored once on five power-play opportunities. The Giants were one-for-two with the man advantage.

Announced attendance at Sandman Centre was 4,424.

With the win, the Blazers improve to 23-8-4-2, still tops in the WHL’s B.C. Division and third in the Western Conference, eight points back of the first-place Seattle Thunderbirds (29-6-1-1), who earned a 4-3 overtime win Wednesday over the Winnipeg Ice (29-5-1-0) in a battle of league heavyweights.

With the loss, the Giants fall to 16-17-4-2 — second in the division and fifth in the conference.

The Blazers play next on Friday, when they head south to Everett to take on the Silvertips (18-18-1-0). The game will be a homecoming for Zellweger and Ryan Hofer, both of whom were traded from the ‘Tips earlier this week.

The club will be back in action on home ice on Saturday, hosting the Spokane Chiefs (7-26-1-2). Puck drop both nights is 7 p.m.
