Highway 97C fully reopened after overnight wildfire

Hwy 97C fire smouldering

UPDATE: 1 p.m.

The BC Wildfire Service says a wildfire at the edge of the Okanagan Connector near Peachland is now officially held.

The fire, which broke out late Tuesday night, was cause for some concern, as trees were seen candling as the fire spread. The highway was closed for a period of time overnight while wildfire crews battled the blaze.

"The status is being held, which means the BC Wildfire Service does not anticipate any further spread beyond the existing or pre-determined boundaries due to fire suppression tactics," says fire information officer Gagan Lidhran.

The fire only grew to about 0.2 hectares.

Lidhran says nine firefighters are working the fire. Air support was not required for the fire.

UPDATE 9:55 a.m.

BC Wildfire crews appear to be mopping up a small wildfire off the Okanagan Connector.

The fire just east of the gravel pit at Trepanier Road is just smouldering. The highway is completely clear in both directions. The smell of wildfire smoke is still hanging in the air in the area.

Castanet has requested more information from the BC Wildfire Service.
