Man jumps into action after watching motorist drive into ditch

Crash caught on dashcam

A West Kelowna man jumped into action after witnessing a single-vehicle incident on Highway 97 just outside of Peachland this week.

"That was scary," says Nathan Strength, describing the incident Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m.

"I thought he was going to merge over but then he went onto the shoulder, then he went over the bank."

Strength says he was doing the posted speed limit of 90 km/h, so the injured driver of the other vehicle must have been going pretty fast when he veered into the ditch and down the embankment.

"I jumped into action, ran down the bank and we smashed the window."

Strength tells Castanet he and a group of other motorists who witnessed the crash engaged the injured male driver and attempted to keep him talking and alert until paramedics arrived on the scene.

"I found his licence so we could ask him questions to help keep him alive. He said he had a fever and a headache before he crashed."

Strength was humble when asked if he considered himself a hero for jumping into action to help the injured motorist, "once I put my four ways on and ran down into the ditch, quite a few people also stopped and we all helped together."
