'Minimal' growth at fire near Brenda Mines, activity expected to increase

'Minimal' growth at Brenda

There has been minimal growth at a large wildfire near the old Brenda Mines site off Highway 97C.

In an update late Monday night, the BC Wildfire Service said despite an increase in fire behaviour during the afternoon, the Brenda Creek fire did not grow much. The fire has been moving east in recent days and remains estimated at 824 hectares.

BC Hydro’s only link to West Kelowna remains within the fire perimeter, but crews are in mop up mode under sections of the transmission line and working on containment along the north and east flanks.

A high-volume water delivery system that was deployed to protect the transmission lines has now been demobilized due to decreased risk of fire in the area.

Five firefighters stayed on overnight to monitor the fire and protect high-value assets.

Despite the good news over the past couple of days, crews are expected to be challenged this week.

“An increase in fire activity is still expected in the coming days as hot, dry and windy conditions will persist. No precipitation is anticipated in the near future. These conditions will continue to challenge fire suppression efforts,” BCWS said.

Fifty-one firefighters, four helicopters and 20 pieces of heavy equipment are assigned to the fire. They are supported by 32 additional staff, including a BCWS incident management team.
