Walmart can't say when fire-damaged West Kelowna store will reopen

Walmart timeline uncertain

There’s still no timeline for the re-opening of the Walmart in West Kelowna, after a fire in the loading bays back on September 1.

The company is trying to keep workers employed through the process.

“Walmart will absolutely support our associates while the store is closed. They will be paid for their scheduled shifts and have been offered the opportunity to work in neighbouring stores to support the community as customers turn to these stores for their local needs,” said Felicia Fefer, manager, corporate affairs, in a statement to Castanet.

She said the store is closed for necessary clean-up and repairs, and it will reopen as soon as possible. Fefer adds Walmart is working with officials to ensure the store is safe and up to the standards customers expect and deserve.

The fire was limited to the loading bays, but there was significant smoke incursion inside the building.

Fefer points out the fire appears to be a criminal act that will unfortunately impact many customers and associates. The company is working closely with officials as they investigate.
