Peachland mayor proposes funding to help support COSAR

Mayor wants to help COSAR

The mayor of Peachland, Cindy Fortin, has added her voice to calls for the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team to get a new home.

In an open letter to COSAR, Fortin says: "thank you for all you do. I think COSAR volunteers are an amazing group of people."

Fortin was reaching out after COSAR's celebration of their new equipment on Sept. 23.

"Unfortunately, the ceremony had to wait as the volunteers were called out to search for two missing hikers in the McCall Lake area above Peachland," COSAR said.

Fortin wanted to express her gratitude after the rescue near McCall lake above Peachland.

"I can’t imagine how relieved and grateful a person(s) is when they see you arrive when they are feeling afraid, injured, lost and vulnerable," she said.

Fortin went one step further, indicating she's a big advocate for COSAR to get a new home, even if that means a better funding model from different levels of government in the Okanagan.

"As I said at a recent RDCO meeting, I would like to see better funding, and perhaps COSAR should become an established RDCO service that all the Central Okanagan local govs contribute to," she said.

"I’m glad to see the new gear cache location set up on the Westside, but was embarrassed to see the conditions of the Old Vernon Road facility that COSAR is currently working out of, and hope you can relocate into a better building soon."
