More than 150 show up for the first of several RDCO pop-up recycling depots

Popular pop-up depot

Pop-up recycling proved popular in Peachland Saturday.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan held its first such event of the year in the lakeside community and the turnout was notable.

Roughly 150 people took advantage of the free event held in the parking lot of the Peachland Community Centre from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.

It is not just an opportunity for residents to get rid of some of the things they can’t put in their curbside bins, but also a chance for RDCO staff to educate the public.

Bins were set up to collect glass, different types of plastics, as well as styrofoam and electronics. The intent was to save residents a trip to the depot.

Waste reduction facilitator Cynthia Coates said the regional district is also conducting a feasibility study on the collection of household organic waste. Currently, only yard waste can go in your green bin in the regional district.

Coates said the study will look at whether collecting things like vegetables, fruit and other compostable items from your kitchen is a viable option, but she also notes that residents are encouraged to do their own backyard composting.

Several similar pop-up recycling depots will be happening in Lake Country on June 18, July 16, August 20 and September 17.
