Peachland drowning victim identified as 57-year-old Lower Mainland man

Drowning in Swim Bay

UPDATE 3:31 p.m.

RCMP is releasing more information on the drowning victim in Peachland Monday afternoon.

Const. Mike Della-Paolera RCMP spokesperson tells Castanet a 57-year-old man from the Lower Mainland lost his life just after 2 p.m. while swimming in Peachland’s Swim Bay.

“This is a sad time for family and friends of this gentleman and the RCMP are saddened by this unfortunate accident.”

The man had been swimming in the area off 6th Street and Beach Avenue with his friends and family members when he jumped in the water on his own but never resurfaced.

“Approximately 30 minutes went by before his disappearance was noticed and after all attempts by the victim’s family and friends had failed to locate the man they contacted the lifeguards who took up the search,” said Della-Paolera.

The lifeguards eventually located the man brought him to the surface and immediately administered lifesaving measures. EHS attended but ultimately the man could not be revived and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.


UPDATE 9:34 a.m.

More details are emerging about a drowning in Peachland Monday afternoon.

RCMP tell Castanet the drowning occurred just after 2 p.m. Monday and the victim was swimming with family and friends.

The victim, identified as a male, jumped into the water and never resurfaced. The body was recovered by the lifeguard on duty who immediately started life-saving measures.

“EHS attended but unfortunately the man did not survive. At this time the BC Coroner Service has taken conduct of the investigation. No criminality is suspected. RCMP provided Victim Services to the family, friends and the Lifeguard,” says RCMP spokesperson Cst. Mike Della-Paolera.

The Mayor of Peachland, Cindy Fortin, has confirmed that a person drowned in Swim Bay in Peachland on Monday.

It is incredibly sad news that there was a drowning at Swim Bay this afternoon,” Fortin says in a Facebook post.

“Our deep and heartfelt condolences are with the family. Please let's not speculate on how it happened, and let the experts do their job,” says Fortin.

Castanet has reached out to RCMP for more details on the incident and Fortin has indicated that Staff Sgt. Duncan Dixon has already commented on the incident and she says, “I'm sure more details will come to light as the days pass.

Swim Bay is located on Beach Ave. in Peachland.
