RV destroyed, two homes damaged in fire in West Kelowna

RV fire spreads to homes

UPDATE 10:30 a.m.

West Kelowna assistant fire chief Lionel Bateman says crews received a report at 9 a.m. of a structure fire that started in an RV and spread to two homes on Shannon Woods Crescent in West Kelowna.

"The fire went up into the eaves and up into the attic space. (Fire crews) were able to knock on it down fairly quick," said Bateman.

It is believed the fire originated in the furnace of the trailer, as the owner had just started it that morning and was preparing the RV for the camping season.

"Nothing is confirmed at this point," Bateman added.

"It's a fairly new trailer. So there will be an investigation."

The RV was completely destroyed and the two adjacent homes suffered serious damage. Occupants are now in the care of emergency social services. There were no injuries in the fire.

Bateman said RV owners starting up their units for the first time this spring should stay nearby for a period of time.

UPDATE: 10:00 a.m.

At least two families will likely not be able to stay in their homes tonight due to the fire.

The RV fire appears to have spread into both attics of the neighbouring homes.

The extent of the damage to the two homes is unknown at this time, however heavy smoke damage is likely.

The West Kelowna Fire Department remains at the scene along with West Kelowna RCMP, BC Ambulance and Fortis.
