17-Year-Old Supports the Unhoused from the Trunk of His Car
Jan 25, 2023
Growing up, Tor Broughton joined his family volunteering in homeless shelters in the Okanagan. Despite rules being established to prevent minors from being present in said shelters, Tor continued to have the drive to help. Halfway through 2022, he decided to begin carrying food and clothing in the trunk of his car to hand out to those experiencing houselessness in Kelowna. Since, Broughton has created an organization dubbed 'Kelowna Street Outreach', built from donations and volunteers to bring nutrition, warmth, bandaging, and toiletries onto the streets of the valley.
Taken from the group's website, "Our vision for Kelowna Street Outreach is to make the support services provided to people without stable housing more equitable and accessible. Oftentimes, services have barriers for people with physical disabilities, mental health challenges, or simply a sense of pride. Reducing a step required (going to a building) can increase the odds that these folks can gain access to necessary resources."
Tor's organization runs through similar principles to the late John Thiessen's work. Additionally, it's built entirely on volunteers and donations. As a result, when donations run dry, the support that Kelowna Street Outreach can provide is minimal. They accept donations in a number of ways; for example, clothing and supply donations, e-Transfer ([email protected]), GoFundMe (https://www.gofundme.com/f/kelowna-street-outreach), and by bringing bottles to the depot under their account!
Kelowna Street Outreach encourages any and all who are able to donate to do so, big or small. For more information, please visit the KSO website at streetoutreach.weebly.com
