Om Naturale Earns Provincial Award

HARRISON HOT SPRINGS—When Om Naturale started selling its line of personal care products in 2008, many market goers weren’t quite sure what to make of the unique packaging on display. Instead of plastic, owner Terryn Corbett opted for more sustainable options like paper, glass and tin which, back then, certainly wasn’t the norm.
Fast forward to last weekend in Harrison Hot Springs where Om Naturale was recognized as the Vendor of the Year at the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets Conference. Corbett believes her commitment to sustainable packaging was one of the reasons her Spallumcheen-based company stood out.
“It might have seemed a bit weird back then to see packaging in glass and tin. Now, people are looking for it and it’s great to see,” said Corbett, a certified herbalist. “After 13 years, it’s nice to know we’re still relevant. Part of that is because we’ve always tried to be at the forefront of the plastic-free movement.”
Terryn and her husband, Graeme Corbett, made the trek to Harrison Hot Springs to attend the Saturday-night banquet, but not before pulling market duty back home. Terryn was at the Shuswap Seed Swap in Enderby, while Graeme manned their booth at the indoor market in Kelowna. They made it to the Fraser Valley with just enough time to check in and freshen up for the awards banquet.
The Corbetts—who are parents to sons Narayan, six, and Bodhi, two—create their line of personal care products on their small farm in Spallumcheen. Their handcrafted products include: organic soap, creams, bath products, toothpaste, lip balm and laundry supplies, all made using simple, natural ingredients. They grow many of the herbs and botanicals used in their products right on the farm.
Terryn managed to operate Om Naturale as a solo enterprise until it simply got too busy in 2018. That’s when Graeme joined her full time. And it has only gotten busier since.
“When people are looking to be a part of their community, I think there’s no better place than your local farmers’ market,” Graeme said. “There’s artists, grass roots farmers and crafters, and by shopping at the market, you’re supporting them directly. Plus, you truly know where your food is coming from, which is important to us.”
Added Terryn: “I love the markets. It’s been my workplace for more than a decade. I’m honoured that we were recognized as Vendor of the Year by our peers, and I’m proud of what we do. Om Naturale has come a long way.”
Om Naturale is a regular vendor at both the Vernon and Kelowna farmers’ markets, as well as other seasonal events throughout the year.
